OEKO-TEX® test institutes

The OEKO-TEX® Association consists of 18 independent textile testing and research institutes in Europa and Japan:


AITEX (Textile Industry Research Association) was set up in 1985 as an initiative of the Valencian Regional Government, through the Valencian Institute for Small and Medium Industry (IMPIVA). It is currently the leading centre for research, innovation and advanced technical services available to the textile, manufacturing and technical textile sectors. AITEX is a private non-profit association that encompasses textile and textile-related companies. Its ultimate aim is to make this sector more competitive. To achieve this, the Institute promotes modernisation and the introduction of new and emerging technologies by developing R&D projects and, in general, any initiatives that will contribute to the industrial progress of the sector. Consequently, the work carried out by the Institute of Textile Technology is closely linked to the sector's industries, either through the advanced technical services offered by the Institute, the confidential research projects developed at the request of different companies or the projects financed by public funding, in which case the results benefit the sector as a whole. AITEX is registered with the Register of Innovation and Technology Centres, registration number 36, as well as the Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI), registration number 115. It is also a member of the Spanish Federation of Innovation and Technology Centres (FEDIT) and the Region of Valencia's Network of Technology Institutes (REDIT) as well as a number of other national and international organisations.


Centexbel, the Belgian Textile Competence Centre, was founded in 1950 to reinforce the competitive position of the Belgian textile companies. To fulfill its mission, Centexbel offers an extensive range of activities and services to the textile industry, including testing, certification, consultancy and Research & Development. Centexbel works in close collaboration with European, industrial companies in collective research and increasingly in private research. Valorisation of the expertise acquired in research, is ensured through efficient and effective problem solving, consultancy and testing. In doing so, Centexbel has built a solid reputation and acts as a key partner in product development for many textile companies. In all its activities, Centexbel guarantees independent and objective advice, the expertise of 155 highly educated collaborators, a practice-oriented support and an open approach.


Centrocot is an Italian Centre of excellence that, since 25 years, supports textile companies operating in fashion and technical sectors, providing highly specialized services. With over 70 employees in staff, Centrocot offers highly qualified human resources performing technical activities as regards laboratory testing, research and development, certifications and training. The laboratories operate as independent third parties are accredited by ILAC-Acrredia under number 0033 for over 400 tests. Thanks to the availability of highly innovative instruments and to technical-scientific skills Centrocot is authorized to issue binding and voluntary marks acknowledged at both national and international level. Centrocot plays an important role connecting institutional Research Bodies and industries by means of continuous contacts with both European and International partners. This activity is aimed at supporting the companies in an essential process of innovation. Collaborating with Centrocot means to simplify and facilitate product, process and market innovation.


As a reference organization within the national and European scene, regarding innovation promotion and development of the Textile & Clothing Industry, CITEVE – The Technological Centre for the Textile and Clothing Industry of Portugal, is a private non profit organization active since 1989. With facilities in Vila Nova de Famalicão and in Covilhã, and commercial delegations in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Tunisia and Pakistan, CITEVE offers technological services of the highest level in different areas: Product Testing & Certification; Technological consultancy & development, R&D+Innovation, Business Consultancy, Training and Fashion intelligence. CITEVE’s laboratories are equipped with the best available technologies controlled by a highly qualified staff and are internationally accredited for more than 446 tests according to 900 different standards. In the field of product and technological development, CITEVE gathers know-how within the most advanced and innovative technologies, organized by pilot plants, available for prototyping, demonstration/reengineering and new product/process development.


The Danish Technological Institute is a self-owned and not-for-profit institution. We develop, apply and disseminate research- and technologically-based knowledge for the Danish and International business sectors. As such, we participate in development projects, which are of use to society in close collaboration with leading research and educational institutions both in Denmark and abroad. On top of this, we carry out consultancy and standardization services, which contribute to a dynamic and harmonious development of society. Our most important task is to ensure that new knowledge and technology quickly can be converted into value for our customers in the form of new or improved products, materials, processes, methods and organizational structures.


As an independent, non-university research institution and working as a non-profit organisation, FILK is distinguished by its particularly close relation to the industry and application focus. The versatile research work at the institute feeds a comprehensive knowledge base, which is continuously broadening and developing. It forms the basis for solutions and developments for applications in diverse industries. In particular, small and medium-sized enterprises are thus supported effectively in solving their daily challenges and in strengthening their innovation capacities. Both of the material groups, leather and plastic sheeting, still play an important role at the institute; however, they no longer represent the complete range of research taking place at FILK. From the historically grown material combination, a unique materials expertise for flexible synthetic and natural polymer materials in different applications and branches of industry has been developed. These include materials such as leather, collagen products, coated textiles, flexible laminar compound materials, and material composites. In addition to applied material research and methodical material and technology development, the services of material testing and analytics in the accredited test laboratory, consultancy and expertise as well as vocational training and qualification are further pillars of the institute's business activities. To perform these comprehensive tasks the institute has an excellent research infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities of analysing and testing systems. The multidisciplinary team of researchers and technical staff enable for completion of complex and transdisciplinary tasks.


The Hohenstein Institute is an accredited test laboratory and research institute. Its work first and foremost involves the testing and certification of textiles. Besides these services, the institute offers research and development in the field of textile products and applications of all kinds relating to its core competencies. It additionally offers numerous further education courses and programmes aimed for example at industry, dealing with all issues throughout the textiles production chain. The laboratory tests and investigations on offer extend from classical material testing through quality assessment of a wide range of product characteristics to the evaluation of product performance for many different applications. Comparative goods testing provides for targeted product development with an eye to possible competitors. Product labels such as the Hohenstein Quality Label or the UV Standard 801 assist manufacturers and traders when marketing the tested textiles. As a founder member the Hohenstein Institute is a leading global laboratory for testing textiles for harmful substances in accordance STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® and the certification of sustainable production facilities according to STeP by OEKO-TEX®. Hohenstein's numerous accreditations include its recognition as a test and certification centre (European Notified Body 0555) for personal protective equipment (PPE).


With 60 years of presence at the side of textile and fashion companies and industrials, IFTH proposes a large panel of solutions to reinforce the strategic pertinence and address the challenge of material and products performance. INNOVATEXT Textile Engineering and Testing Institute - founded in 1949 - is the central research, development and testing basis of the Hungarian textile and apparel industry. The Institute is a member of the Hohenstein Institute group since 2004. The MSZ EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited institute is recognized as a European notified test center (No. 1523) for personal protective equipment (PPE). INNOVATEXT represents the OEKO-TEX® Association more than 20 years and is the only center in Hungary which performs the certification process for the purposes of STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® and STeP by OEKO-TEX® marking. The Institute employs highly-qualified staff and is equipped with modern research and analytical equipment, and therefore provides perfect conditions for research and development activities implemented according to the latest research standards in the textile industry and related fields of knowledge. As a professional institute in assessing textile product quality, INNOVATEXT engages in testing according to customers' requirements, contributes to develop new products and testing methods cooperating with many national and international partners. Being a member of the consortia set up through the co-operation TEXTRANET – AUTEX - EURATEX, over the past years INNOVATEXT has played an active role in the preparation of new projects and participated in a number of Hungarian and international R&D projects within the Lenonardo da Vinci Program, EUREKA, the European Framework Programs, etc.


Instytut Włókiennictwa (IW) (English: Textile Research Institute) in Lodz is the oldest R & D centre of the textile industry in Poland. In its long 69-year-activity IW has always played a significant role in the development of new textile technologies and has cooperated with industrial partners. Today IW continues to search for new areas of research cooperating with many national and international research centres and technical universities, participating in interdisciplinary research programs thus creating the new face of the textile industry. 4 scientific departments and 6 accredited testing laboratories form research and testing potential of IW. Within the scope of testing services there are chemical tests, instrumental analysis and testing: physico-mechanical and wear properties, electrostatic and surface properties, textile fabric structure, yarn and fibre identification tests, textile fabric evaluation. Services are provided for local and foreign clients – R&D centres and companies representing different branches of industry. IW has TEXTIL-CERT Certification Unit as separate body within its structure. The unit holds PCA accreditation certificate No. AC 017 and is a notified body to 2 EU directives - 89/686/EEC – PPE and 2009/48/WE – Safety of toys (Notification no. 1435). The Textile Research Institute represents the OEKO-TEX® Association and is the only centre in Poland which performs the certification process for the purposes of STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® and STeP by OEKO-TEX® marking.


MIRTEC S.A. ‐ Materials Industrial Research and Technology Development Centre, is active in Applied Research, Technological Development, Certification and Quality Control in a wide range of materials and products. The company was founded by the merge of three renowned Greek technological centers with over 25 years of experience. Whilst each had a unique focus and expertise, today, within MIRTEC S.A., they share the same vision of excellence, offering to clients services of a wider range of materials and allowing them to achieve improved Products, Processes, Performance and Profitability. MIRTEC S.A. operates under the supervision of the Greek Ministry of Development and its shareholders are the Greek State and private companies. MIRTEC SA has highly specialized laboratories accredited according to ELOT EN ISO / IEC 17025. Its Athens Branch laboratories (CLOTEFI premises) offers specialized knowledge in the area of Organic, fibrous and textile materials by providing product certification, quality control services, technical consultancy, development of technical specifications for textile materials and clothing, both for public organizations and private companies.


Nissenken starts evaluating textile products as test center in 1948. We are growing technique to do various tests in a neutral position. And we evaluate new material and added value to respond variety needs. Furthermore we have joined Oeko-Tex international association since 2000, only one laboratory in Japan. Our mission is combine customers, products and producers with confident bond. Now, we have more than 20 laboratories and inspection centers in Japan, China and ASEAN countries. Nissenken's 3 main pillars include: (1)Safety, Confidence and Health (tests to protect healthy and safe life). We evaluate carcinogen in dyestuff, formaldehyde, heavy metals, antibacterial activity, antimould activity etc., (2)Oeko-Tex® (International standard certification to prove for human-safety). It’s world certification system for safety to human body from raw materials to end products for textile, (3)Functionality (tests for realizing comfortable life with human-friendly function). We evaluate functions to contribute healthy life and safety, flame-retardant, air permeability, thermal property, quick-drying property etc. Works for supporting customers include: (1)Fabrics inspection (colour fastness, physical performance, dimension change ratio, basic performance of fabric. Also composition display by examining the rate of mixed composition), (2)Products and Garments inspection (in state of final products, we check defects and inspect such as dimension and appearance change. Garments inspection works are mainly done in China and ASEAN countries), (3)Security & Safety Evaluation Testing (we test and evaluate materials and products used for safety protections and disaster preventions. We measure reflectance factor and phosphorescence not only for textiles but also for other materials), (4)Technical consultant and support for quality assurance (we work technical support and advice for making standard and develop new test method for clients).


Since our founding in 1967, we have established a reputation with both manufacturers and traders alike for testing and certifying textiles, interior design materials, personal protective equipment (PPE) and testing textile and resilient flooring. Furthermore, we are one of the founding members of the "International OEKO-TEX®" Association, a union of 16 renowned institutes for ecological textile research and testing. Consequently, we certify products to the „STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®" as well as textile manufacturers and retail companies to the „STeP (Sustainable Textile Production) by OEKO-Tex®" certification system. We are an accredited testing and certification body. Together with our customers, our innovation team develops new product ideas and testing methods. We also drive forward our own services portfolio with our own standards and brands „IS-ÖTI TESTED", "IS-OETI INSPECTED" and "Checking and Evaluation of indoor air quality". At our Austrian location in Vienna, we offer our customers a broad-based training and seminar programme. Seminar topics available include textile knowledge, safe-to-use floor coverings, green public procurement, safety and ecological requirements and training for testing and certifying materials.


The Prüf- und Forschungsinstitut Pirmasens e.V. (PFI) was founded 1956 in the shoe capital of Pirmasens (Germany) and is a highly-developed non-profit institute with a network of worldwide contacts and a broad range of research and service activities. At ISC (International Shoe Competence Center), our teaching and research centre, we offer tuition in a wide range of practically oriented subjects for the international footwear and leather industry.


RISE IVF AB, founded in 1964 and with headquarters in Gothenburg, offers advanced R&D and consulting services to the manufacturing and engineering industry. Our goal is the rapid introduction of new technologies and methods to practical use in our customers' operations. Additionally, RISE IVF AB carries out testing and analysis within a number of disciplines. Within the material fields of textiles, polymers and ceramics, we offer mechanical, chemical, physical, rheological and thermal testing and analysis. Our textiles testing department is one of Northern Europe's largest textile laboratories and accredited according to ISO IEC 17025. We offer customers around 400 different tests methods within the areas of mechanical and physiological tests, washing and wash processes, flammability tests and chemical analyzes. Our chemical laboratory conducts the tests necessary to ensure that products do not contain harmful substances, either to humans or the environment. RISE IVF AB also has a branch in Oslo with a focus on services in the areas of textile testing, chemical analyzes, Oeko-Tex® certification and lightweight.

TESTEX AG with headquarters in Zurich is a privately-organized, since 1846 global and independent Swiss testing and certification enterprise, focusing the textile sector. Its range of services extends from standard physical and chemical textile tests through residue and harmful substance analysis to factual investigation in cases of damage, consulting on environmental and quality issues, and special services such as organising round robin tests and on-site services. Our testing facilities are structured in such a way that we can make available a comprehensive range of tests for all textile raw materials, semi-finished and finished products. We are especially proud to be one of the few institutes in the world which is still able to test raw silk and silk products. As an accredited testing laboratory we consider ourselves obliged to improve our quality management and technical expertise continuously in the service of our clients. We therefore endeavour always to perform tests in accordance with national and international regulations and standards.


VÚTCH-CHEMITEX, spol. s r.o. in Žilina has been operating on the market as a technical specialized facility for 40 years. Our activities include research, development and innovations of textile materials with a wide range of applications; research and development in the field of textile finishing and surface treatments of textile and non-textilematerials; research and development of machines and equipment for textile technologies, textile finishes, testing and sewage treatment plants; conformity assessment of personal protective equipment according to the EU Directive No. 89/686/EEC (European Notified Body No. 1296); testing of colouristic, physico-mechanical properties and performance characteristics of textile materials; content analysis of chemical substances and/or additives in textile materials and evaluation of their health safety; and evaluation of environmental parameters of textile and composite materials, analyses of industrial wastes. Testing laboratories are accredited according to STN EN ISO/IEC 17025, the Certification Body for the products is accredited according to STN EN 45011 and the Inspection Body is accredited according to STN EN ISO/IEC 17020.
