OEKO-TEX® for retailers

OEKO-TEX® for buyers and quality representatives

Each product in the range with the label "Confidence in textiles" improves the credibility of the whole company. It conveys the message that health and well-being of the customers are important to the company. At the same time, STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® supports the retail trade with meeting its legal duty of care. And it offers real added value which helps consumers with their decision – particularly when the other product properties are identical. This in turn provides buyers with a guarantee on many levels – in the end, they are measured by what sells well.

Legally binding proof

A valid OEKO-TEX® certificate produced by a supplier provides retailers with protection under civil law in addition to the independent proof of the product being harmless to health.

For: Each retailer has to ensure within their means that the quality of the goods is in accordance with the legal regulations.

There is no principle of trust stating that the previous stage in each case, e.g. the brand supplier, has taken all required measures. If the ordered goods have the OEKO-TEX® certificate, compliance with the criteria is a "warranted property".

For any questions about existing certificates the OEKO-TEX® test institutes are happy to offer support to the (retail) trade.

OEKO-TEX® certificate

An OEKO-TEX® certificate is valid for a period of 12 months and documents that the articles listed in it have been successfully tested according to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®.

It should be noted that an OEKO-TEX® label attached to the product alone does not suffice as proof of successful testing for harmful substances. Retailers should therefore insist on being presented with the valid OEKO-TEX® certificate by their supplier when purchasing their range of products.

Missing certificates or data of products supplied deviating from the certificate indicate improper use of the OEKO-TEX® label and should be reported to the OEKO-TEX® Association immediately. For any questions about individual certificates the OEKO-TEX® test institutes are happy to offer support to retailers to clarify any open issues.

Advertising certificates

With the supplier's consent, retailers can use the certificates presented by the licensees for advertising Oeko-Tex® certified products .

It is also possible for retailers and mail-order companies to be actively involved in the Oeko-Tex® certification system themselves with their own certificate .

This means they are allowed to mark advertised products with a uniform Oeko-Tex® test label in catalogues, adverts, leaflets etc. - the products for sale retain the original certificate number from the supplier, though.

OEKO-TEX® for sales people

Consumers are becoming increasingly sensitive. When a customer inquires whether a product is harmless to health or tested for harmful substances, sales personnel can point out STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® with confidence and a good conscience. Products marked with the label "Confidence in textiles" provide effective protection against allergenic substances, formaldehyde, heavy metals such as nickel or for example forbidden plasticizers (phthalates) in baby textiles. The OEKO-TEX® test label also offer support as an important added value for closing a sale and has also proven to be a worthwhile argument during price discussions. The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® also benefits from a high level of prevalence and memorability, immediately conveying a good feeling to consumers.

The OEKO-TEX® Label

The yellow and green OEKO-TEX® label with its catchy globe covered in textiles is an internationally registered, protected trademark. It is only valid if an actually awarded test number and the relevant test institute are displayed. This information also has to correspond to the relevant certificate .

This enables the International OEKO-TEX® Association to check at any time whether a right to use the label exists. This ability to clearly verify authorisation is one of the basic principles of the certification system and ensures the end user's confidence in the label. The validity of an OEKO-TEX® label can be verified at any time on the internet using the test number provided.

The label can be attached to the product in different ways – as a hang tag, as a sewn-in label, as an imprint on the packaging etc. Labelling is not mandatory, however, some manufacturers decide against it. That means: There are far more certified products on the market than can be seen at first glance. The buyers' guide on this website shows which goods without labels have also been tested for harmful substances. This knowledge helps sales personnel in their sales discussions.

Selling points at a glance

Certainty for increasingly sensitive consumers = selling with a clear conscience!

This is our motto for the following list of selling points which argue in favour of OEKO-TEX® certified products.

  • Added value
Textiles tested for harmful substances offer all the advantages of modern textile products (quality, functionality, fashion/trends, durability etc.) and yet they are proven to be harmless!
This added value facilitates the buying decision, particularly where price discussions are concerned.
  • Extensive safety
All product components have to be harmless without exception, that means they have to meet the required human ecology criteria. The OEKO-TEX® laboratory tests also take into account all conceivable ways how harmful substances could enter the body.
  • Transparency
The OEKO-TEX® test criteria are valid worldwide. It therefore does not matter where the certified products are manufactured and where consumers buy them.
  • Reliability
All test criteria which take into account the intended use of the product ensure reliable safety. OEKO-TEX® certified products are also subject to random testing after certification in the framework of product control tests .
  • Independence
Testing and certification of the products is carried out exclusively by neutral/independent facilities: The accredited research and testing institutes of the International OEKO-TEX® Association.
  • Verifiability
Consumers can independently verify the validity of a label using the test number provided at any time (www.oeko-tex.com/validity).
  • Up-to-date
The OEKO-TEX® test criteria are updated annually and extended or tightened up as required.
  • Distribution
Products with OEKO-TEX® labels are available in almost all product segments and everywhere in retail (specialist shops, department stores, mail order etc.). The focus of certification is on clothing (underwear, tops/T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, shorts, trousers, socks, gloves, headgear etc.) and home textiles (bed linen, mattresses, pillows, duvets, terry items, table clothes, curtains, upholstery coverings etc.). But numerous technical textiles (e.g. fabrics for car interiors, shading textiles) and products for medical use (e.g. bandages, support stockings) are certified as well.
