No, audits for OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 and LEATHER STANDARD are conducted as part of the STeP audits framework.

The full test program of the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100  is carried out to ensure product safety. In addition, tests for genetically modified (GMO) cotton and pesticides are carried out to ensure organic farming. OEKO-TEX® has developed a quantitative GMO test, which allows us to differentiate unintentional contamination from deliberate mixing in conventional cotton. In case of a failed qualitative GMO test, the quantitative GMO test allows us to determine whether the failure was due to unintentional contamination, such as fibre fly, or not.

The trade of organic cotton is safeguarded by requiring each facility to obtain a transaction certificate for every change of ownership, every sale, and every transaction. Facilities must also submit supporting documents, including OEKOTEX® ORGANIC COTTON certificates and invoices. These documents are checked for every transaction. During the annual on-site visits, they are reviewed again to ensure compliance and to prevent fraud.

No. Products certified to the OEKO-TEX® ORGANIC COTTON standard must be made exclusively from certified and tested organic cotton. The use of conventional cotton is not permitted. However, as an exception, it may be used for accessories such as sewing threads or elastic bands.
