Basic information on product labelling

If the products tested by OEKO-TEX® meet the requirements of the respective standard, the applying company is authorised to label its articles with one of the OEKO-TEX® product labels or to use the label for other marketing purposes within the defined period of the existing certification.

Protected trademarks

The OEKO-TEX® product labels (STANDARD 100, MADE IN GREEN, LEATHER STANDARD, ECO PASSPORT) are internationally registered trademarks that are legally protected by the Madrid Agreement.

  • Forgeries and misuse of the trademarks will be prosecuted under criminal and civil law.
  • An OEKO-TEX® product label is valid only if it includes the actual assigned test number (STANDARD 100, LEATHER STANDARD, ECO PASSPORT) or a product ID (MADE IN GREEN) and the responsible test institute.

This allows the International OEKO-TEX® Association to verify whether a label is authorised for use at any time. This principle of unique verifiability is one of the cornerstones of the OEKO-TEX® system and safeguards the end consumer's trust in the brand.

Unique product reference

  • For any type of advertising using one of the OEKO-TEX® labels (product labelling, marketing, sales) it must be absolutely clear to which product the OEKO-TEX® label refers.

This means that a direct and unique product reference must be provided whenever one of the labels is used. In concrete terms, that means that an OEKO-TEX® label can only be used in brochures, catalogues, online shops and elsewhere when it is referencing a product with the test number/product ID displayed on it.
  • This basic principle applies both to positioning of the OEKO-TEX® label itself and to product labelling in text form where reference is made to an existing OEKO-TEX® certificate/label, stating the correct test number/product ID and test institute.
  • If a one-to-one reference is not possible or practical in individual cases, a collective or advertising test numer or product ID can also be requested. A special advertising label can then be generated based on this collective or advertising test number/product ID by OEKO-TEX®. The listed test number/product ID in this case does not reference an individual product, but instead represents the company in general or stands for different certifications subsumed under this test number/product ID.

Basic elements of the OEKO-TEX® product labels

Each OEKO-TEX® label consists of five basic elements that must be included in every version of the label - as shown above in the example of the MADE IN GREEN label:

  • The respective product logo - e.g. MADE IN GREEN
  • The test number / product-ID, and the name of the responsible OEKO-TEX® institute
  • The explanatory label text - e.g. "Tested for harmful substances and produced sustainably in accordance with OEKO-TEX® guidelines"
  • The respective internet address - e.g. ""
  • The frame around all other label contents.

Without these basic elements all the OEKO-TEX® labels (including STANDARD 100, MADE IN GREEN, LEATHER STANDARD and ECO PASSPORT) are not legally valid!

Minimum width of the OEKO-TEX® product labels

  • Regardless of the form of product labelling, or any other label use for advertising purposes, the minimum width of all OEKO-TEX® labels is 27 mm (to ensure an adequate legibility).
  • The height of the label may vary depending on the language of the label text.

May I modify the form of the OEKO-TEX® labels?

No. Label templates that either have been issued by one of the OEKO-TEX® institutes or have been downloaded from the MyOEKO-TEX® portal can be used only in the form provided by OEKO-TEX® without any modifications.

Where can I get templates of the OEKO-TEX® product labels?
